History of Redeemer Lutheran Church
The history of Redeemer Lutheran Church began with a worship service on October 15, 1961 at the South Mercer Island Club, at 88th (Island Crest Way) and SE 68th, conducted by Rev. Bernhard Filbert. Ten days later an organizational meeting was attended by Kenneth Baker, Maynard Hanson, Eugene Meixner, Walter Otto, Ernest Smith and Pastor Filbert. Plans proceeded for building church facilities at a five acre site between 60th and 61st Aves. The Building Committee consisted of Eugene Meixner, Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Hanson, Chauncey Richardson, and Ernest Smith. Ground breaking was Dec. 9, 1962.
Plans to build a parsonage began in 1964 and Pastor Dierks and family moved to the new parsonage in late 1965.
Redeemer became self-supporting with the sale of excess property in April 1977.
